Why this variety: The Colossal Chestnut tree originated in Nevada City, CA in 1925 and is very cold hardy. It produces extra large nuts (only 11-15 nuts per pound). The percentage of perfect nuts is very high with this variety and the flavor is sweet with a smooth texture, great for culinary purposes. It grows quickly and according to commercial chestnut growers, the Colossal chestnut tree is the industrial producer of the largest nuts, highest volume, and starting at one of the youngest ages. At maturity the Colossal Chestnut is a majestic centerpiece and shade tree in the landscape.
As a hybrid cross between a Japanese and European Chestnut this variety is reported to be resistant to Chestnut blight and can produce over 50 lbs of chestnuts at maturity.
