It was introduced in 1944 by Albert Etter, a California horticulturist. The blooms are attractive starting out deep red then slowly changing into light pink. The fruit is beautiful in deserts and salads, and the flavor is a good mix of sweet and tart at full ripeness. If you’d like it a little more tart for baking simply pick it slightly earlier.
